With the debut song “Come Away with Me”, Norah Jones has already revitalized the international jazz scene. Suddenly, the interest in this music style was back. The critics rolled over in hymns of praise for her songs. It shouldn’t stop there. The album was extremely successful and made the petite New Yorker into an international superstar. Eighteen years have passed since then. In 2020, Norah Jones is coming back with a new album. Pick Me Up Off the Floor will be released on the June 12th and will be focused on the highly talented daughter of Ravi Shankar.
Shankar had become world-famous musician in the 1960s. His friendship with George Harrison, guitarist of the Beatles, also had an impact on the Beatles’ sound. This can be clearly recognized on the famous record Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely-Hearts Club Band. His daughter followed in his footsteps in the early 2000s.
Her Debut Broke all Records
She was born in New York City and grew up with her mother in Texas. Her interest in jazz grew steadily, but it was only in high school that she finally turned to the music. Jones already won numerous awards in the mid-1990s. But then she decided to complete her jazz piano training first. After a summer vacation in her hometown of New York, she began to write and perform her songs. The young singer quickly became known in the local jazz scene. Norah Jones founded a trio and got the opportunity to record some demos for the famous jazz label Blue Note Records. Her first songs were so good that she got the chance to record an album. In 2002, Come Away with Me hit the market and broke all the previous records. Since that day, her debut album has been sold in 27 million copies. Norah Jones once again made jazz attractive for a mass market and won eight Grammys that year. The next album Feels Like Home followed the success of her debut album and gave Jones the freedom to do numerous musical experiments. Her success continued, but the mainstream audience withdrew somewhat.
Two Albums in Four Months
Now the jazz singer is coming back into the spotlight for her eighth album. With the support of Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, and other musicians, Norah Jones recorded a total of eleven songs in numerous sessions and various line-ups. This time Blues, Soul, and Americana have also been incorporated into more distinctive sound. It means that fans can look forward to the American’s second release within a few months. Just a few months ago the second album of her band Puss-N-Boots with the title Sister was released. The first songs of Pick Me Up Off the Floor can already be found on YouTube with the corresponding videos. The songs such as I’m Alive, Were You Watching?, How I Weep and Tryin ‘To Keep It Together is revealing a mature musician on another peak of her art.
